About AVB files

The .AVB file extension is most notoriously associated with Avid Media Composer, where it functions as a 'Bin' file. Here is the critical difficulty: An .AVB file does not contain actual video. It is a small metadata container - essentially a database - that points to where the video and audio files (like MXF or MOV) are stored on a hard drive. Users frequently receive an .AVB file via email expecting to watch a rough cut, only to find it cannot be opened by video players like VLC or converted directly to MP4. To view the content, you must have access to the original media files and the Avid software. If you are trying to move a project to Adobe Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, the .AVB file itself is useless on its own; you must open it in Avid and export the sequence as an AAF or XML file. Less commonly, an .AVB file may be a Sage 300 ERP macro used for accounting automation, or a legacy character file for Microsoft Comic Chat.

The AVB Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AVB converter.
