Extract text from Avid Log Exchange files (ALE)

The .ALE file is primarily an Avid Log Exchange file. It stores plain text metadata about video and audio clips. This includes timecodes, tape names, clip names, and frame rates.
Video editors use this format to transfer log data between different Non-Linear Editing (NLE) systems. The most common software used to manage these files is Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere Pro.
The .ALE format causes frequent confusion because it does not contain actual video or audio media. It is strictly a text-based metadata log. Users often expect a playable video file and are disappointed when it fails to open in media players. Furthermore, the format uses a very strict header and tab-delimited column structure. Opening it directly in standard spreadsheet software often breaks the formatting and misaligns the crucial timecode data.
The best target formats for an .ALE file are CSV, TXT, or XML. Converting to CSV allows you to read the log safely in Microsoft Excel or other database tools, though strict Avid import compatibility may be lost during the conversion.
This file format is difficult to convert properly because NLE software expects exact column names, headers, and spacing. Standard online converters usually fail to parse the specific Avid header block. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.
