About PMW files
The .PMW file extension primarily acts as a Poliscript Media Workstation video subtitling project file. These files store critical broadcast data, including subtitle text, precise timecodes, font styling, and video reference paths. A secondary application for the .PMW extension is as an HMI screen project file generated by Pro-face GP-Pro software for manufacturing machine interfaces. To view or edit the subtitling data correctly, users must rely on professional broadcast editing software, most notably Avid Media Composer. Working with .PMW files presents significant disadvantages for standard users. It is a strictly proprietary format. Sharing these files means the recipient must possess a costly, active software subscription to simply view the subtitles. Because the files contain complex encoding rather than plain text, opening a .PMW file in a standard web browser or a basic text editor results in unreadable characters and corrupted timecode data. When distributing subtitles, the best practice is to convert .PMW files into universally supported formats like SRT, VTT, or plain TXT. Moving to these standardized formats guarantees playback compatibility across almost all modern video players and web platforms. However, users should be aware that converting out of the proprietary environment often strips away advanced metadata, such as specific broadcast positioning, custom fonts, and proprietary styling rules. This proprietary structure makes the .PMW file notoriously difficult to open or convert using generic tools. Standard online converters routinely fail to process it because interpreting the project data requires the original proprietary rendering engines. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Our engine will inspect the file to show any readable text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

The PMW Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PMW converter.
