About AAF files

The .AAF (Advanced Authoring Format) is a professional multimedia file format used to exchange video and audio projects between different non-linear editing (NLE) and digital audio workstation (DAW) platforms. It contains edit metadata, such as cuts, transitions, and audio levels, and can optionally embed raw media. It is widely considered the industry standard for moving timelines from Avid Media Composer or Adobe Premiere Pro into audio mixing suites like Pro Tools.

Despite its status as a standard, the .AAF format is notoriously frustrating to work with. Because different software packages use proprietary engines to render effects and transitions, moving an .AAF file often results in lost data, offline media, dropped text layers, or broken audio sync. Additionally, if you choose to embed media rather than link it, .AAF files easily exceed tens or hundreds of gigabytes, making them nearly impossible to transfer via standard internet connections. You cannot view them in web browsers or standard media players.

For better compatibility with modern software like Final Cut Pro, convert .AAF to XML (specifically FCPXML). For legacy text-based sequence lists, convert to EDL. If you need to view the project as a playable video, you cannot do a simple format conversion; you must render it to MP4 or MOV using a video editor. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software. Note: In a secondary use case in Turkey, some .AAF files are actually ZIP archives containing official EYP documents; these can be converted directly to PDF.
