The .anc file extension is a highly fragmented format used across completely unrelated industries. Most commonly, it functions as a CNC machine G-code program containing toolpath instructions generated by CAM software like Alphacam or Microvellum. However, the exact same extension is also utilized for seismic accelerograph data by geological organizations, ancillary 3D model data within Systems Tool Kit (STK), and even AI configuration files in the video game Baldur's Gate 3. Because .anc is an arbitrary extension claimed by multiple developers, it creates significant workflow friction. Users face a major disadvantage: standard operating systems cannot identify the file type natively, and opening the CNC-based variants usually requires an expensive, proprietary CAM software license.
