The .AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) file is an audio container and compression format specifically optimized for speech coding. It was standardized by the 3GPP in 1999 and became the default format for voice memos, dictation apps, and MMS messages on mobile phones (particularly older feature phones).
You can open these files on a desktop using dedicated media players with built-in codecs, such as VLC media player or the older AMR Player.
The main disadvantage of the .AMR format is its extreme frequency limitation. Because it is designed solely for human speech, it aggressively discards audio data outside the 200–3400 Hz range. This makes the format virtually useless for music, environmental sounds, or high-fidelity recordings. Furthermore, .AMR files lack native playback support in modern web browsers, smart speakers, and most Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) like Audacity without manually installing FFmpeg libraries.
To make these files usable today, conversion is mandatory. For broad compatibility across all devices, social media, and web platforms, convert to MP3 or AAC. If you need to import the voice recording into an editor, convert to WAV. Note that converting to an uncompressed format will not restore the frequencies lost during the original AMR compression.
