About ALF files

The .alf file extension is most frequently associated with the Unity game engine as an Activation License File. These are generated during the manual activation process when a computer lacks internet access, serving as a digital handshake containing hardware, software, and user identifiers in an XML format. Users typically encounter this file when trying to license Unity or Avid software offline. The friction arises because the file itself is not the final license; it is a request token that must be uploaded to a specific portal to generate the usable ULF (Unity License File) or final key. Opening it directly in Windows or macOS often yields a "file not recognized" error or displays raw XML code that is difficult for humans to parse.

Another notable use is within the ACT! CRM ecosystem as an ACT! Lookup File, which stores saved database queries or contact lists. Legacy users may also find .alf files acting as databases for Ability Office or label designs for Kiaro. For Unity users, the primary goal isn't traditional conversion but processing: verifying the XML content by converting to TXT or archiving the license request as a PDF. For database users (ACT!/Ability), the goal is data extraction. Proprietary lock-in often makes accessing this data impossible without the original software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ALF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted AFL, AVIF, AIF, PDF, ZIP, REM, REP and PAD files.

The ALF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ALF converter.
