The .REP file extension is primarily used for two entirely different purposes: proprietary enterprise Business Reports (generated by SAP BusinessObjects, Oracle Reports, or DataFlex) and Game Replay files (popularized by StarCraft, Command & Conquer, and X-Plane). Enterprise report files contain compiled layout definitions, database queries, and business intelligence data. Conversely, gaming .REP files do not store video pixels; they contain lightweight engine telemetry and keystroke sequences that force the game engine to perfectly re-simulate a match.
Because .REP formats are heavily proprietary, they are exceptionally frustrating to open without their native software. Enterprise reports often require expensive corporate licenses or database connections to render properly. Gaming replays are equally fragile, demanding the exact game patch version to avoid playback desynchronization. Sharing a raw .REP file is usually ineffective because the recipient rarely has the required environment or game client installed, and these files cannot be previewed in web browsers.
To bypass these limitations, you must export or convert the data. For enterprise files, convert .REP to PDF for universal document archiving, or extract the tabular data to CSV and XLSX for spreadsheet analysis.
