About AIFC files
The .AIFC file is a legacy Compressed Audio Interchange File Format developed by Apple for the classic Mac OS ecosystem. Unlike standard AIFF files, which store massive uncompressed audio (similar to WAV), AIFC uses compression schemes like ULAW, ALAW, or G.722 to save disk space - essentially serving as the 1990s equivalent of MP3.
While efficient for its time, .AIFC is now a source of significant friction. Modern media players on Windows and Android frequently fail to open these files because they lack the specific decoders for the internal compression method. Furthermore, professional audio tools (DAWs) often reject AIFC files or misinterpret the compressed data as static.
For general listening and broad compatibility, the best solution is to convert AIFC to MP3 or AAC. If you intend to edit the audio in software like Adobe Audition or Audacity, you must convert it to uncompressed WAV or AIFF first to ensure the waveform renders correctly and to prevent further quality loss during processing.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your AIFC file.

The AIFC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AIFC converter.
