Convert ABF to another file type

To convert ABF backup files to another format, you need pCLAMP or other Data software.

Convert a file to ABF

To convert other file formats to the "Scientific Data & Backups" file type, you need software like pCLAMP or a similar tool.

About ABF files

The .ABF file extension primarily stands for Axon Binary File, a proprietary format used to store electrophysiology data. Scientists use it to capture voltage and current traces in neurobiology patch-clamp research. Secondarily, .ABF is widely used for system backups by Sophos UTM firewalls, Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services, and various accounting software.

To open scientific .ABF files, researchers rely on pCLAMP or Clampfit. Backup variants must be restored using their parent software, such as the Sophos UTM interface or Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.

Users face major hurdles with .ABF files because they are highly specialized, proprietary, and locked to the software that created them. Scientific .ABF files require expensive, niche software licenses just to view a single data trace. Backup .ABF files are similarly restricted; a firewall backup cannot be read as plain text, and restoring a SQL database backup requires spinning up a dedicated server environment.

Researchers often need to convert .ABF data to CSV or TXT to plot graphs in Python, R, or Excel. Backup files are rarely converted directly, though some underlying structures (like ZIP or RAR accounting backups) can be extracted if properly identified.

Because the .ABF extension is shared across multiple unrelated applications - from brain wave recordings to firewall configurations - it is notoriously difficult to open or convert. Standard online converters fail because they misidentify the file and cannot parse raw binary arrays. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ABF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MZML, AVIF, ZIP, EXE, ASC, BAK, PDF, DAT, INDD, CRDOWNLOAD, ACSM, AI and CT files.

FAQ

If you want to convert ABF file to CSV, PDF, BAK, BACKUP, OLD, TMP, TEMP, ARC, ZIP, TAR, GZ or 7Z, you can use pCLAMP or similar software from the "Electrophysiology Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert SNAPSHOT, OLD, IMG, RESTORE, ISO, COPY, VMDK, TMP, VHD, BAK, ARCHIVE or BACKUP files to ABF, try pCLAMP or another comparable tool in the "Electrophysiology Data Storage" category.

The ABF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ABF converter.
