About ABF files
The .ABF (Axon Binary File) extension is primarily a binary data container used for electrophysiology recordings, created by Molecular Devices software like pCLAMP and Clampfit. While highly efficient for storing complex waveform and time-series data, the format poses significant challenges for collaboration: it is proprietary, strictly version-dependent, and requires expensive, specialized software to view. Researchers often struggle to share these files with colleagues who do not possess a pCLAMP license, or find themselves unable to import the raw binary data into modern analysis tools like Python, MATLAB, or Excel. To overcome these hurdles, users typically convert scientific .ABF files to CSV or XLSX for broad compatibility and data plotting, or to the text-based ATF (Axon Text File) for archival.
Secondary to scientific use, .ABF files frequently appear as Analysis Services Backup Files generated by Microsoft SQL Server. These are critical for database recovery but are useless without a matching SQL environment to restore them; users often look to extract schema or data into SQL scripts or standard BAK formats. Finally, in legacy design contexts, .ABF may represent an Adobe Binary Screen Font. These outdated font files are often incompatible with modern operating systems (Windows 11/macOS) and web browsers, necessitating conversion to OTF or TTF for continued use in Adobe Creative Cloud or web design.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ABF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted MZML, AVIF, ZIP, EXE, ASC, BAK, PDF, DAT, INDD, CRDOWNLOAD, ACSM, AI and CT files.
The ABF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ABF converter.
