About 3DI files
The .3di extension is shared by two distinct, incompatible 3D formats, often causing confusion for users.
1. NovaLogic Game Model (Most Common)
For most users, this is a legacy game asset used by NovaLogic for titles like Delta Force, Comanche 4, and Black Hawk Down. These proprietary files store static 3D geometry and indexed textures optimized for the Voxel Space engine. They are binary blobs that cannot be opened in standard 3D software like Blender or Autodesk Maya. To edit these assets or use them in modern engines (Unity/Unreal), you must convert them to OBJ or GLB using specialized community-created extraction tools.
2. Cadence 3D Design (Professional)
In the engineering sector, .3di is an ASCII-based interchange format used by Cadence and Artwork Conversion Software. It describes 3D Integrated Circuits (3D-IC), PCB substrates, and bond wires. Unlike the game format, these are technical layout files used for thermal analysis and physical verification. Engineers often need to convert these to STEP for mechanical CAD work or 3D PDF for documentation.
Convert.Guru analyzes your 3DI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert 3DI file to [% faq_exts_to %], you can use Delta Force or similar software from the "Game 3D Model" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert [% faq_exts_from %] files to 3DI, try Delta Force or another comparable tool in the "Game 3D Model" category.
The 3DI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our 3DI converter.
