A .ZPAQ file is a highly compressed, journaling archive format created by the ZPAQ archiver. It was designed to maximize data compression through context mixing and arithmetic coding.
Developed by Matt Mahoney, it is primarily managed via the command line or specialized third-party software like PeaZip and custom forks of 7-Zip. The format is heavily used for deduplicated backups where preserving historical versions of files is necessary.
The main disadvantage of .ZPAQ is its severe lack of native compatibility. Windows, macOS, and mobile operating systems cannot open it without third-party installations. Furthermore, while the compression ratio is exceptional, the decompression speed is notoriously slow. Sharing a .ZPAQ file with a non-technical user usually results in frustration, as they will be unable to access the internal data.
To share these archives practically, you should convert .ZPAQ to ZIP, 7Z, or .TAR.GZ. Converting to ZIP guarantees universal access on any device, though you will lose the journaling and deduplication features. Converting to 7Z is a good middle ground for retaining high compression with better software support.
