About ZON files
A .ZON file primarily functions as a proprietary zone data file used by game engines to define spatial boundaries, triggers, and environmental regions in games like Silent Hunter 3 and the Grand Theft Auto series. In industrial applications, it is utilized as a 3D measurement zone file for Zonemaster scanners by KOBOLD Messring GmbH. The significant disadvantage of the .ZON format is vendor lock-in. These files are typically compiled into undocumented binary or custom plain-text formats that cannot be natively previewed in web browsers. Attempting to open them in standard software usually yields unreadable gibberish, and altering the spatial logic requires highly specialized, community-built modding utilities rather than commercial applications. Because .ZON files store coordinate data and scripts rather than printable pages or images, direct conversion to standard visual formats like PDF or JPG is completely impossible. If the underlying data is text-based, the most pragmatic conversion targets are TXT, XML, or JSON to allow for external script parsing. For 3D measurement variants, extracting dimensional data to CSV is the only realistic solution, though complex spatial relationships are often lost. This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert because standard online converters completely fail to process its closed, proprietary structure. Often, only the original game engine or the specific 3D measurement software can properly read or export the data. However, just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported on convert.guru. Our engine can identify the exact file variation, inspect the binary, and reveal hidden text or internal hexadecimal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded text structure, viewing or data extraction may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ZON file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ZON file to JPG, INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, ENV or PROPERTIES, you can use Grand Theft Auto III or similar software from the "Spatial Boundary & Trigger Mapping" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to ZON, try Grand Theft Auto III or another comparable tool in the "Spatial Boundary & Trigger Mapping" category.
The ZON Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ZON converter.
