The .movpkg (Movie Package) format is a specialized container used by Apple for offline downloads in Apple Music and Apple TV. It stores HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) content, including Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio, ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec), and 4K HDR video.
To open or play these files natively, users must use the official Apple Music or Apple TV applications on macOS, iOS, or iPadOS.
Users frequently struggle with .movpkg files because they are proprietary and highly restrictive. On macOS, a .movpkg is a "bundle" - a folder masquerading as a single file. Inside, the media is fragmented into hundreds of small chunks and heavily encrypted using Apple's FairPlay DRM.
