Extract text from renamed archives (ZI)

The .ZI file extension is most commonly a renamed ZIP or RAR compressed archive. Users typically change the file extension from zip to .zi to bypass restrictive email attachment filters or corporate firewalls that automatically block executable and archive files. Occasionally, a .ZI file might also be a legacy font file used by PC Paintbrush, an early raster graphics editor developed by ZSoft Corporation.
To interact with a renamed archive, users historically needed extraction software like WinZip, WinRAR, or 7-Zip after manually changing the extension back.
The primary disadvantage of using a .ZI file is that the recipient's operating system will not recognize it natively. Double-clicking it will trigger an unknown file type error. Furthermore, modern enterprise security systems inspect internal file headers (MIME types) rather than relying on file extensions, rendering the renaming trick completely ineffective and often causing the file to be permanently quarantined as suspicious. If the file is a PC Paintbrush font, the format is entirely obsolete and unsupported by modern operating systems.
To solve these usability and security issues, you should extract the contents or convert the file to a universally recognized format. For archiving and secure sharing, convert it back to a standard ZIP or 7Z. If you need the documents inside, extract them to common formats like PDF or JPG.
