A .ZI file is typically a renamed ZIP archive, a clever workaround used to bypass email servers and antivirus filters that automatically block standard ZIP or EXE attachments. By truncating the extension, the sender tricks the security system into treating it as a benign, unknown file type, but this leaves the recipient with a file that the operating system doesn't know how to open. While effective for transfer, this format is a common source of difficulty: you cannot double-click to view the contents, and manually renaming extensions in Windows or macOS can be intimidating or disabled by default settings.
Less commonly, a .ZI file might be a legacy PC Paintbrush font file from ZSoft, or a renamed RAR archive serving the same evasion purpose.
For immediate access, the best approach is to convert or rename the file back to its native ZIP format. If you need to share the contents securely without resorting to renaming tricks, converting the archive to 7Z (using 7-Zip) or .TAR.GZ is recommended, as these formats often pass through filters more easily than standard ZIPs while offering superior compression ratios.
