About Z7 files
The .z7 extension is a classic example of a "file format collision," creating confusion for users because it serves three completely different purposes. Statistically, the most common use (44%) is a 7-Zip compressed archive - often a standard 7z file that has been misnamed or is part of a split multi-volume set (e.g., archive.7z.007 truncated to .z7). These files offer high-ratio LZMA compression but cannot be opened by default Windows tools. The second most common use (37%) is a timetable data file for Zusi 3, a professional-grade German train simulator. These files contain raw XML data describing train schedules and routes. Finally, the extension officially belongs to the Z-machine (Version 7), a virtual machine format used for interactive fiction games from the 1980s (like those by Infocom). While rare (0.9%), these files are distinct binary stories.
Common Friction Points: Users struggle because standard unzipping tools like Windows Explorer will reject a .z7 file unless it is renamed or opened explicitly with 7-Zip. Zusi files are unreadable without the simulator, and Z-code files require a specific interpreter like Frotz.
Best Conversion Targets:
For Archives: Convert to ZIP or just extract the contents for immediate access.
For Zusi Data: Convert to XML or TXT to view the underlying schedule data in a text editor.
For Games: Convert (run) via an interpreter, or convert the story data to TXT (transcript) for reading.

The Z7 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our Z7 converter.
