Convert LZMA to another file type
To convert LZMA archives to another format, you need 7-Zip or other Compressed software.
Convert a file to LZMA
To convert other file formats to the "LZMA Compressed Archive" file type, you need software like 7-Zip or a similar tool.
About LZMA files
The .lzma file is a data stream compressed using the Lempel-Ziv-Markov chain algorithm (LZMA). Developed by Igor Pavlov for the 7-Zip archiver, this format provides exceptionally high compression ratios. It is predominantly used in Unix-like environments via LZMA Utils or XZ Utils, and is occasionally utilized by software developers to compress game map assets in titles like World of Tanks.
Despite its impressive compression capabilities, the raw .lzma format has significant limitations. It is a legacy, single-stream format. Unlike 7Z or ZIP, a bare .lzma file cannot hold multiple files or directory structures natively without being wrapped in a tarball first (creating a .tar.lzma file). It lacks built-in error recovery, checksums, and multi-threading support for fast decompression. Furthermore, default operating system tools on Windows and macOS cannot open .lzma files natively, which frustrates end users and blocks simple file sharing.
To ensure your data is accessible, conversion is the most practical step. For universal compatibility, convert to ZIP. For archiving multiple files with modern, efficient compression, convert to 7Z or .TAR.XZ.
Convert.Guru analyzes your LZMA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert LZMA file to ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, CAB, ACE, ARJ, LHA or Z, you can use 7-Zip or similar software from the "Single File Data Compression" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to LZMA, try 7-Zip or another comparable tool in the "Single File Data Compression" category.
The LZMA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LZMA converter.
