About XMT_TXT files

The .xmt_txt file is a text-based CAD exchange format generated by the Parasolid geometric modeling kernel. It is functionally identical to the more common X_T format, serving as a "Transmit" file to move 3D geometry, topology, and color data between different CAD systems.

Because .xmt_txt relies on ASCII text encoding, these files are significantly larger than their binary counterparts (XMT_BIN or X_B), making them slower to upload and process. A common source of friction is that many modern CAD applications - such as SolidWorks or Onshape - filter specifically for X_T files by default, meaning users often have to manually select "All Files" or rename the extension just to make the file visible to the importer. Furthermore, as a proprietary B-Rep format, it cannot be opened by standard image viewers or browsers.

For 3D printing, the best workflow is converting .xmt_txt to STL or 3MF. For interoperability with non-Parasolid software (like Blender or AutoCAD), converting to STEP or IGES ensures the highest fidelity geometry is preserved. If you simply need to view the model without expensive CAD licenses, dragging the file into a converter is often the fastest solution.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XMT_TXT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted XMT, X_T, X_B and PNX files.

The XMT_TXT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XMT_TXT converter.
