About XMD files
The .XMD extension is a classic example of file format collision, effectively acting as a "black box" container that varies wildly depending on its origin. For the majority of users (approx. 50%), an .XMD file is a proprietary Game Data or 3D Model file associated with engines like Gamebryo, Starbreeze, or Eko Software. These binary files store geometry, animations, or game logic optimized for runtime performance rather than interoperability. The primary catch here is proprietary lock-in; standard 3D software like Autodesk 3ds Max or Blender cannot open these natively without specific, often obscure, plugins or unpacking tools. Users typically need to convert these assets to OBJ, FBX, or GLTF to access the 3D content for modding or archiving.
In a corporate environment, the file likely represents Analytics Extended Metadata used by Salesforce. These are text-based files (XML or JSON) that define the visual formatting - such as colors and labels - of analytics dashboards. While editable in a text editor, they are often converted to standard JSON or XML for better compatibility with external version control systems. Finally, legacy users may encounter .XMD as a Disc Image created by GEAR Software or Engelmann Media. These act like virtual CDs but are unsupported by modern operating systems, necessitating conversion to the industry-standard ISO format.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XMD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted MXD, XSD, ALO, KF and NFT files.
The XMD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XMD converter.
