To convert other file formats to the "Alamo Engine 3D Model" file type, you need software like Star Wars: Empire at War or a similar tool.
About ALO files
The .ALO file format primarily stores proprietary 3D models and structural assets utilized by the Alamo Game Engine, developed by Petroglyph Games. These files contain the geometry, skeleton rigging, and hardpoint data required to render units in classic strategy games like Star Wars: Empire at War. A secondary, entirely unrelated use for .ALO files involves chemical hazard dispersion modeling generated by ALOHA (Areal Locations of Hazardous Atmospheres), a specialized simulation tool developed by the EPA and NOAA.
Working with .ALO game models is notoriously frustrating because the format is a closed, compiled binary. Standard 3D software like Blender or Autodesk Maya cannot import these files natively. The format locks away shader paths and animation controllers that break easily if opened forcefully. For ALOHA simulation files, the data is similarly restricted to the official EPA software environment.
If you need to edit an Alamo 3D model, your best conversion targets are standard formats like FBX to preserve basic skeleton data, or OBJ for simple static meshes. Be aware that you will lose engine-specific physics and weapon hardpoint logic during the export. For ALOHA simulations, exporting the plume data to KML for Google Earth is the most pragmatic way to share the visual results.
Because .ALO relies on undocumented, proprietary structures, standard online converters universally fail to process them. Often, only specialized community modding plugins or the original software can properly parse the geometry. Even if a full 3D conversion fails, our analysis tool can inspect the binary, extract readable metadata, and reveal hidden texture paths embedded inside the file.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ALO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ALO file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use Star Wars: Empire at War or similar software from the "Game Engine 3D Model" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to ALO, try Star Wars: Empire at War or another comparable tool in the "Game Engine 3D Model" category.
The ALO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ALO converter.
