About XMB files
The .XMB file is a Binary XML data file primarily used by video game engines to store compiled game settings, scripts, and unit attributes. Originally popularized by Ensemble Studios for titles like Age of Empires III and Age of Mythology, the format is also heavily utilized in Super Smash Bros, Halo Wars, and the Rugby Challenge series. Game developers compile standard XML into binary XMB format because it drastically reduces file size and loads much faster into system memory.
To open or edit these files natively, players rely on community-built modding tools specific to the game, such as UnXMB for Super Smash Bros or specialized Age of Empires file extractors. Standard text editors cannot parse the binary structure.
Users typically need to convert .XMB files because they want to modify game variables, create mods, or extract internal engine data. The major disadvantage of the .XMB format is its proprietary, closed nature. It is completely unreadable without specialized decompilers and lacks official documentation, frustrating users who simply want to tweak a basic game setting.
The best target conversion format is standard XML or TXT. Converting the binary file back to standard XML restores the human-readable tags and nested values. However, recompiling an edited XML back into a functioning .XMB file requires exact engine-specific formatting to prevent game crashes.
This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert because the binary structure varies wildly between different games and developers. Often, only the original game engine or a dedicated community script can properly read or export the data. Even if full decompression is blocked by proprietary engine locks, our analysis can detect supported underlying layers like GZIP compression, allowing you to inspect embedded text strings.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XMB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The XMB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XMB converter.
