About XBM files

The .XBM file extension typically functions as either a proprietary compiled game texture or a legacy monochrome image format. In modern contexts, it is primarily an internal texture file used by CD Projekt's REDengine for games like Cyberpunk 2077. These files are proprietary, meaning you cannot open them directly in standard editors like Adobe Photoshop. Modders constantly struggle with this format and must convert it to edit in-game assets. In legacy systems, .XBM stands for X BitMap, an obsolete 1-bit image format created for the X Window System.
