About XFR files
The .XFR extension primarily refers to 3D model fragments used by the RAGE Engine (Rockstar Advanced Game Engine), famously utilized in Rockstar Games titles like Grand Theft Auto IV. These files contain binary geometry data specifically optimized for game streaming, not for human editing.
A common problem for users is proprietary lock-in. You cannot simply drag an .XFR file into Blender or Autodesk 3ds Max; the data is fragmented and requires specialized middleware like OpenIV or GIMS Evo scripts to reconstruct the mesh. Modders often need to convert these directly to OBJ or FBX to modify vehicle assets or map props.
Alternatively, in scientific computing, .XFR files are compressed graphic exports generated by Scilab. These are often GZIP-compressed storage files for plots. While efficient for storage, they are useless for publication or web use. Users in this domain typically need to convert these plots to PDF or SVG for vector-quality reports, or PNG for quick sharing. Less commonly, .XFR files may be automotive parts lists from Mercedes-Benz software, which usually require conversion to XLSX or PDF for inventory management.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XFR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted XRF, RIP, AMD and BMD files.
The XFR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XFR converter.
