The .XDP file format primarily functions as an XML Data Package or XML Forms Architecture (XFA) file. These files are used to package PDF form data, annotations, and layout information into a single XML-based container. Historically created using Adobe LiveCycle Designer (now Adobe Experience Manager Forms), these dynamic forms are heavily utilized for government documentation, most notably by the UK Government (HMRC) for tax submissions. A less common variation of the .XDP extension is a PLC project file managed by XINJE XDPPro industrial software (which uses a standard ZIP internal structure), or even a game rules override file for the classic game Red Alert 2.
The main disadvantage of the .XDP format is its heavy reliance on proprietary Adobe architectures. Users frequently experience frustration when trying to open them because modern web browsers like Chrome, Safari, and Edge completely lack native XFA support. Instead of rendering the form, browsers often display a confusing 'Please wait...' error message. Viewing or filling out these forms usually requires a desktop installation of Adobe Acrobat Reader. Furthermore, the industrial PLC project variant requires highly specialized automation software that is useless to the average consumer.
When dealing with form data, you typically want to convert .XDP files to standard PDF, XML, or DOCX formats for reliable sharing and viewing across any device. Be aware that converting an XFA-based XDP file to a standard PDF will flatten the document, meaning you will lose dynamic form fields, dropdowns, and embedded scripts.
Because it relies on complex, proprietary schemas, this file format is difficult to open or convert with standard tools. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data.
