About XDP files
The .XDP file extension stands for XML Data Package, a format primarily developed by Adobe to package PDF form components within an XML container. These files are typically created by Adobe LiveCycle Designer (now part of Adobe Experience Manager) and contain the layout, template data, and form logic required to render dynamic XFA forms.
The catch for users is that .XDP files are notoriously difficult to open in modern web browsers (like Chrome or Edge) or non-Adobe PDF viewers (like Mac Preview). Because they rely on the deprecated XFA (XML Forms Architecture) standard, attempting to view them often results in a frustrating "Please wait..." error message instead of the actual document. Additionally, because the file is technically XML text, opening it in a standard text editor reveals raw code rather than the visual form.
To make these files usable, the best approach is conversion based on your intent. For general viewing, printing, or archiving, convert the .XDP to a flattened PDF. This removes the dynamic XFA scripts and ensures the document looks the same on any device. If you are a developer needing to extract user inputs or database connections, converting to standard XML or TXT is preferable. Less commonly, an .XDP file may be a project file for Xinje PLCs used in industrial automation; in this specific case, the file is a compressed binary unrelated to Adobe forms and must be opened with XDPPro software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XDP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XDP file to PDF, XML, HTML, CSV, JSON, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF or DAT, you can use Adobe Acrobat or similar software from the "XML Form Data Package" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to XDP, try Adobe Acrobat or another comparable tool in the "XML Form Data Package" category.
The XDP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XDP converter.
