About JIF files
A .jif file is a Raster Image saved in the JPEG Interchange Format. While technically identical to the ubiquitous JPG or JPEG, this specific extension is often used for raw JPEG streams that do not include the standard JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) header information.
Recently, the format has seen a resurgence in workflows involving the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA). In these cases, the file acts as a container for "Content Credentials" - an authenticity manifest that proves the image's origin and edit history. While valuable for security, this specialized container causes significant friction: default image viewers on Windows and macOS frequently fail to recognize the extension, and web Content Management Systems (like WordPress) often block it for security reasons.
For general use, the best solution is to convert the file to a standard JPG (for photography), PNG (for screenshots), or PDF (for archiving). This ensures the image headers are normalized so the file opens in all software without error.

The JIF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JIF converter.
