About CIT files

A .CIT file is primarily an Intergraph CCITT Raster Image, a legacy bitmap format developed by Intergraph (now part of Hexagon AB and widely used with Bentley MicroStation). These files are typically bitonal (black and white) scans of large-format engineering drawings, maps, or architectural blueprints compressed using CCITT Group 4 algorithms. While efficient for storing massive line-art scans, .CIT files are functionally obsolete for modern web and office workflows. They cannot be opened by standard image viewers like Microsoft Photos, web browsers, or mobile devices, requiring specialized CAD software or legacy viewing tools to interpret the proprietary header information. Users frequently face "invalid format" errors when trying to view these legacy archives. To make these drawings accessible for consultation, printing, or digital archiving, the best practice is to convert them to TIFF (to preserve the exact raster data and metadata), PDF (for easy sharing and multi-page documents), or PNG (for web viewing). Less frequently, a .CIT file may be a project configuration file for AVEVA Plant SCADA (formerly Citect SCADA), which is completely incompatible with image viewers.

The CIT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CIT converter.
