About CIT files
A .CIT file is primarily a legacy raster image format used by Intergraph MicroStation for CAD design drawings, GIS, and mapping overlays. It stores bi-level raster data, typically using CCITT compression. Alternatively, a small number of .CIT files function as project configuration databases for AVEVA Plant SCADA utilizing a Microsoft Compound structure.
You typically need specialized legacy tools like MicroStation to open these CAD image files natively.
Because .CIT is a highly proprietary, outdated format, it presents significant sharing and archiving challenges. Modern operating systems, web browsers, and standard image viewers simply cannot read it. Sharing a .CIT file with non-technical clients guarantees errors and frustration, as it demands expensive or obsolete software just to view the drawing. Furthermore, keeping architectural or engineering data locked in this format risks long-term data loss as old software versions become completely incompatible with modern hardware.
For web compatibility and simple viewing, convert your .CIT files to PNG or JPG. For reliable archiving and sharing with clients, convert to .PDF/A. If you need to edit the drawing in modern vector CAD software, you must convert and trace the raster to DXF or DWG - however, be aware that automatic raster-to-vector tracing often generates messy, imprecise lines compared to native vector data. The CIT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CIT converter.
