About FH files

The .FH extension typically denotes a vector graphics project created by Macromedia FreeHand, a once-dominant illustration tool acquired by Adobe in 2005 and subsequently discontinued. These files contain scalable vector paths, text, and raster effects used for logos, brochures, and print design.

Why convert it? A major drawback of .FH files is "abandonware" friction. Adobe officially ended support for FreeHand, and modern versions of Adobe Illustrator have removed the ability to open older FreeHand versions (specifically version 9 and earlier), leaving valuable assets locked in an obsolete proprietary format. They cannot be opened in standard web browsers or generic image viewers.

To salvage these designs, users should convert them to PDF for universal viewing or EPS and AI (Illustrator) to retain editable vector paths. For web use, converting to SVG is essential.

Secondary Use Case: In scientific circles, specifically dendrochronology, an .FH file may contain Heidelberg tree-ring data used by TSAP-Win software.
