About DRM files
The .drm extension is a classic example of a filename collision, utilized by three distinct industries: music production, telecommunications engineering, and video game development.
Most commonly, a .drm file is a Drum Map generated by Steinberg Cubase. These are essentially XML-formatted text files that map MIDI notes to specific drum sounds (e.g., mapping "C1" to "Kick Drum"). While they are technically readable in a text editor, the raw XML structure is cumbersome for humans to parse quickly. Musicians and producers often need to convert these maps into PDF or Excel (.XLSX) formats to create printable reference charts for session drummers or to migrate mapping data to other Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) that don't natively support the Steinberg format.
In the telecom sector, .drm refers to log files created by Accuver XCAL software during mobile network drive tests. These contain critical signal data but are often locked within the proprietary XCAL ecosystem. Engineers frequently need to convert these logs to CSV for analysis in Excel or KML to visualize network coverage on Google Earth.
Finally, legacy gamers may encounter .drm files as data archives in Crystal Dynamics games like Tomb Raider: Legend. These are binary "BigFiles" containing textures and models. Unlike the text-based Cubase files, these require specialized extraction tools (like Gibbed's Tools) to unpack assets into usable PNG or OBJ formats. Whether you are debugging a network, mixing a track, or modding a game, the key is correctly identifying the file source before attempting conversion.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DRM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert DRM file to EPUB, MP3, MP4, PDF, MOBI, INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML or YAML, you can use Steinberg Cubase or similar software from the "Cubase Drum Map Definition" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to DRM, try Steinberg Cubase or another comparable tool in the "Cubase Drum Map Definition" category.
The DRM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DRM converter.
