About RAX files

The .RAX file extension serves two entirely different, deeply proprietary purposes. Most commonly, it is a Gas Chromatography Raw Data file generated by PerkinElmer laboratory equipment and managed via their TotalChrom or ChemStation software suites. Alternatively, it functions as an encrypted RealAudio music file previously sold through the discontinued RealNetworks Music Store. Both variations of the .RAX format present significant usability barriers and are highly restrictive. PerkinElmer raw data files are locked behind expensive, specialized laboratory software, meaning you cannot natively open them in a standard spreadsheet tool to review your chromatogram peaks. Similarly, the audio variant of the .RAX file suffers from aggressive Digital Rights Management (DRM), making the media entirely unplayable on modern audio players, smartphones, or web browsers. Users must convert these files to escape vendor lock-in and regain access to their data. For laboratory analysis, convert the numerical instrument output to CSV or TXT to plot the data in Microsoft Excel or specialized Python libraries. For permanent archiving and compliance record keeping, exporting the chromatogram visualization to .PDF/A is strongly recommended. For legacy audio files, convert them to MP3 or WAV for universal playback, keeping in mind that DRM decryption may be required first. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The RAX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RAX converter.
