About WHM files
The .whm extension masquerades as a standard web file but is actually a proprietary game asset found in two major titles: Grand Theft Auto IV and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War.
1. GTA IV In-Game Website (Most Common)
In GTA IV, WHM files are archives that simulate the game's internal internet (e.g., www.whattheydonotwantyoutoknow.com). While they serve the function of HTML pages within the game engine, they are binary containers holding compiled text, scripts, and WTD texture dictionaries.
The Problem: You cannot open these in Google Chrome, Firefox, or a text editor. They appear as gibberish if you try.
The Solution: Modders use tools like OpenIV or SparkIV to unpack these containers. Once opened, you can view the internal textures and convert them to PNG or JPG for standard editing.
2. Warhammer 40,000 Model File
In Relic Entertainment's Dawn of War series, the WHM file is a 3D model format (sometimes called "Relic Chunky"). It stores unit meshes, skeletons, and animation data.
The Problem: These files are locked to the specific game engine and cannot be opened directly by Blender, Maya, or 3ds Max.
The Solution: To edit these models or 3D print them, you must convert them to OBJ or FBX. This requires specific community plugins, such as the Dawn of War Import/Export addon for Blender or the Mudflaps WHM Converter.
