The second common use (approx. 25%) is as an Open Web App manifest, a JSON-formatted text file used by the KaiOS platform and the legacy Firefox OS. These manifests define application metadata, such as launch paths, icons, and permissions. Because these are raw code files, double-clicking them often triggers an "Unknown File Type" error rather than opening a code editor.
To resolve access issues, the conversion strategy depends on the internal format. If the file is an Open-Xchange package, the most pragmatic "conversion" is renaming the extension to ZIP to unzip the contents. If it is a manifest, converting the file to JSON or TXT makes it universally readable in editors like VS Code or Notepad++. For archiving or sharing specifications without risking code alteration, converting the text content to PDF is the standard best practice.
