About VBK files
The .VBK extension is shared by two distinct but widely used formats: digital textbooks and server backups.
1. VitalSource eBook (Most Common)
For students and professionals, a .VBK file is typically a DRM-protected digital textbook downloaded via VitalSource Bookshelf. These files act as secure containers for PDF (fixed-layout) or EPUB (reflowable text) content. The primary constraint is proprietary lock-in; you cannot open these files in standard readers like Adobe Acrobat, Kindle, or Apple Books. Users frequently need to convert .VBK to PDF to print unrestricted pages, use text-to-speech tools, or archive their library. Direct conversion is difficult due to DRM encryption, though users often utilize virtual printing features or specialized decryption tools to liberate the content.
2. Veeam Backup File (Enterprise)
In IT environments, a .VBK file represents a Full Backup created by Veeam Backup & Replication. Unlike the eBook format, this file is often gigabytes or terabytes in size, containing a block-level image of an entire virtual machine. The frustrating part is accessibility; you cannot simply "open" a backup file to see inside. To migrate data or recover a dead server without the full Veeam suite, administrators often convert the internal disk images into standard VMDK (VMware) or VHD/VHDX (Hyper-V) formats using the standalone Veeam Extract Utility.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VBK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert VBK file to PDF, VMDK, EPUB, OVA, VHD, OVF, ISO, BAK, BACKUP, OLD, TMP or TEMP, you can use VitalSource Bookshelf or similar software from the "Digital Textbook / Virtual Backup" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SNAPSHOT, OLD, IMG, RESTORE, ISO, COPY, VMDK, TMP, VHD, BAK, ARCHIVE or BACKUP files to VBK, try VitalSource Bookshelf or another comparable tool in the "Digital Textbook / Virtual Backup" category.
The VBK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VBK converter.
