Convert VPT to another file type
To convert VPT pinball tables to another format, you need Visual Pinball or other Game software.
Convert a file to VPT
To convert other file formats to the "Pinball Simulation Data" file type, you need software like Visual Pinball or a similar tool.
About VPT files
The .vpt extension represents a legacy Visual Pinball Table, a compound file format used by versions 8 and 9 of the Visual Pinball engine. These files function as self-contained containers holding the table's layout geometry, texture images, sound effects, and the embedded Visual Basic Script (.vbs) that controls game logic.
The Problem: Obsolescence & Physics
The primary challenge users face is that .vpt files are designed for the older DirectX 7/9 engines. They are not natively compatible with the modern standard, Visual Pinball X (.vpx), which uses a completely different physics engine and DirectX rendering pipeline. While you can technically import a .vpt into the newer editor, the physics (ball behavior, flipper strength) will be broken, and lighting will often look flat or incorrect. It is not a simple "save as" conversion; it is effectively a "porting" process.
The Solution: Upgrading or Extracting
For pinball enthusiasts, the goal is usually one of two things:
Conversion to .VPX: Use the "Import" function in Visual Pinball X to bring the geometry over, then manually rebuild the physics properties to match modern standards.
Asset Extraction: If the table is too old to convert reliably, users often need to extract the embedded VBS script or texture images to use in a fresh build.
Secondary Use Case: Business Dashboards
In a corporate environment, a .vpt file is likely a ViewPoint Dashboard definition created by Fortra (formerly HelpSystems) for their SEQUEL software. These are small definition files that query IBM i (AS/400) databases. Users typically do not want to convert the definition file, but rather export the data results it generates into XLSX (Excel) or PDF reports.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VPT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert VPT file to VPX, EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP or SAV, you can use Visual Pinball or similar software from the "Pinball Table Simulation" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to VPT, try Visual Pinball or another comparable tool in the "Pinball Table Simulation" category.
The VPT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VPT converter.
