About VPX files

A .vpx file is most commonly a virtual pinball table created for Visual Pinball X (VPX), the tenth major iteration of the popular open-source pinball emulator. These files are actually complex containers (often based on the Microsoft Compound File structure) that bundle table geometry, high-resolution textures, mechanical sound effects, music, and the VBScript code required to run the game logic. While they offer incredibly realistic physics, the format is strictly proprietary to the Visual Pinball ecosystem. This can be a major source of frustration: you cannot open a .vpx file in standard 3D modelers like Blender or AutoCAD directly, nor can you play them in competing simulators like Future Pinball without extensive manual recreation. Furthermore, .vpx files are version-sensitive; a table saved in VPX 10.7 may not load correctly in VPX 10.6, leading to script errors or missing assets.

For users looking to access the content inside, the best "conversion" approach is extraction via the VPX Editor's internal managers. You can export the playfield and plastics images to PNG or JPG for web use or editing in Adobe Photoshop. Audio clips can be exported to WAV for archiving or MP3 for casual listening. The game logic can be extracted as a vbs text file for code analysis. Note that a secondary, unrelated use of the .vpx extension is for Avast Antivirus update packages (often named vps.vpx). These are binary system files used by Avast to update virus definitions and cannot be converted or opened manually.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VPX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CPH, PZP and ALBM files.
