About VMSG files
A .VMSG file is primarily a standard text-based backup format for SMS and MMS messages, utilizing the vMessage specification. Historically generated by Windows Phone (Lumia) devices and various Android implementations (like older Samsung devices via Smart Switch), these files encapsulate message bodies, timestamps, sender details, and sometimes media references.
A common issue with .VMSG files is that they are technically plain text but practically unreadable. Opening one in a standard text editor reveals a chaotic mix of headers (like BEGIN:VMSG), metadata, and quoted-printable encoding (e.g., =E2=80=99 instead of an apostrophe), making linear reading impossible. Furthermore, modern smartphones often struggle to re-import these legacy backups without specific third-party tools.
For archiving or legal review, the best approach is converting .VMSG to PDF, which renders the conversation threads into a readable document format. For data analysis or migration to spreadsheets, converting to CSV is ideal. To view the raw content without the encoding artifacts, a conversion to TXT or HTML strips the headers while decoding the message text.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VMSG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert VMSG file to BAK, BACKUP, OLD, TMP, TEMP, ARC, ZIP, TAR, GZ, 7Z, RAR or ISO, you can use Android OS or similar software from the "SMS/MMS Message Backup" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SNAPSHOT, OLD, IMG, RESTORE, ISO, COPY, VMDK, TMP, VHD, BAK, ARCHIVE or BACKUP files to VMSG, try Android OS or another comparable tool in the "SMS/MMS Message Backup" category.
The VMSG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VMSG converter.
