About VMAP files
A .vmap file is a raw, uncompiled game level created using Valve's Source 2 Hammer Editor, the level design tool for titles like Dota 2, Half-Life: Alyx, and Counter-Strike 2. Unlike the older VMF format used in the original Source engine, .vmap utilizes the newer Source 2 architecture to store map geometry, entity logic, navigation meshes, and lighting setups. The primary problem for users is that .vmap files are strictly project files; they are not playable until compiled into a binary format (usually internal or packed resources) and cannot be opened by standard 3D software like Autodesk Maya or Blender without specific add-ons. Users typically seek to convert .vmap files to universal 3D formats like OBJ, FBX, or GLTF to export level geometry for rendering, portfolio displays, or editing in third-party modeling suites.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VMAP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert VMAP file to SHP, KML, KMZ, GPX, GEOJSON, TOPOJSON, TIF, TIFF, ECW, SID, IMG or DEM, you can use Hammer Editor or similar software from the "Source 2 Uncompiled Map" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert LAZ, KMZ, DTM, CSV, DEM, PRJ, LAS, GPX, DSM, SHP, DBF or KML files to VMAP, try Hammer Editor or another comparable tool in the "Source 2 Uncompiled Map" category.
The VMAP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VMAP converter.
