Convert PBF to another file type
To convert PBF Files to another format, you need OpenStreetMap or other GIS software.
Convert a file to PBF
To convert other file formats to the "Binary Map Data File" file type, you need software like OpenStreetMap or a similar tool.
About PBF files
The .pbf file extension primarily stands for Protocolbuffer Binary Format, a highly compressed data structure used by the OpenStreetMap project to store geographic map data. It replaces the older XML-based OSM format because it is significantly smaller and faster to process. Another very common use for .pbf files is as a project file for CEWE Photoworld, containing layouts, text, and image references for printed photo books. Historically, the extension was also used for system backups by MOBILedit! and Microsoft ActiveSync, or even as data archives for games like UltraStar Deluxe.
The main disadvantage of OSM .pbf files is that they are highly compressed binary data, meaning they cannot be read by standard text editors or generic GIS tools without specialized parsing. They often contain massive datasets, such as entire continents, that will easily crash standard software. On the other hand, CEWE .pbf files are strictly proprietary. They lock your photo book design inside a closed ecosystem, forcing you to order through their service. You cannot simply open a CEWE .pbf in Adobe InDesign.
Users typically need to convert OSM .pbf files to OSM (XML), GEOJSON, or SHP (Shapefile) to edit map features in QGIS or ArcGIS. For CEWE photo books, users want to convert .pbf to PDF or JPG to print the book elsewhere or share it digitally.
Because these formats are either highly specialized binary structures or closed proprietary projects, standard online converters usually fail. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, convert.guru offers a practical workaround. Just drag and drop your .pbf file to identify the exact format, inspect the internal file signatures, and show text or embedded content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying format - like standard ZIP compression in UltraStar game data or GZIP in Mapbox Vector Tiles - viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PBF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PBF file to OSM, MBTILES, GEOJSON, SHP, CSV, JSON, XML, IMG, MP3, WAV, AAC or FLAC, you can use OpenStreetMap or similar software from the "Map Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to PBF, try OpenStreetMap or another comparable tool in the "Map Data Storage" category.
The PBF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PBF converter.
