About VGX files
A .vgx file is a "black box" format that typically falls into one of two incompatible categories, creating significant confusion for users.
1. Vectorworks Graphics Scene (Most Common): This is a read-only 3D container generated by Vectorworks CAD software. It is strictly an export format designed to be uploaded to Vectorworks Cloud Services for viewing on the web or the Nomad mobile app.
The Problem: Users often receive this file thinking they can edit the 3D model. You cannot import a .vgx file back into Vectorworks. It is a "dead end" format meant only for presentation, not modification.
The Structure: Internally, it is a ZIP archive containing 3D geometry and textures optimized for streaming.
Conversion: Since you cannot edit it, the best workflow is to request the original VWX file from the creator. If you just need to view it, upload it to the Vectorworks Cloud. For archival or 2D use, ask the sender to export to PDF or DWG instead.
2. Thermo Scientific Spectroscopy Data: These are scientific data files used by Thermo Scientific Avantage software for X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) analysis.
The Problem: These files act like encrypted archives (using the Microsoft Compound File Binary format). They contain complex instrument readings that cannot be opened in standard text editors or Excel.
Conversion: To use this data for analysis, you must open it in the Avantage suite and export the datasets to CSV, XLSX, or the universal VAMAS (.vms) format.

The VGX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VGX converter.
