About VGD files
The .VGD extension primarily identifies Spectroscopy Data files generated by VG Scientific instruments (now part of Thermo Fisher Scientific) using the Avantage data system. These files store complex surface analysis measurements, specifically from X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES). While critical for materials science, the format poses significant accessibility challenges; it is a proprietary implementation of the Microsoft Compound File format, effectively locking valuable experimental data behind expensive, licensed software like Avantage. Researchers without access to the specific instrument workstation often find themselves unable to analyze spectra or generate figures for publication. To overcome this lock-in, it is essential to convert .VGD files into the standard VAMAS (.VMS) format for cross-platform compatibility, or into CSV and TXT for analysis in Microsoft Excel or OriginLab Origin. For documentation, converting the visualized spectra to PDF or PNG is recommended.
Less frequently, .VGD files may be Vectorian Giotto project files. These are vector animation projects used to create Flash content. Since Adobe Flash is obsolete, users with these files often need to recover vector assets by converting to standard formats like SVG or viewing the final output as legacy SWF video.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VGD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted VGP, VGX, ZIP, MBTILES, XLSX, DTA, MLX, EPW, TXT, GDS, PTH, PCAP and SDF files.
The VGD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VGD converter.
