The .UPL file extension primarily identifies UltraStar Playlist files used by the open-source karaoke game UltraStar Deluxe. These plain text files function as organizational containers, referencing audio tracks, video files, and lyrics stored externally rather than containing the media itself. While essential for organizing karaoke sessions, .UPL files are virtually useless outside the game environment; standard media players like VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player cannot parse them, leaving users unable to view or play their song lists elsewhere.
A significant secondary use (approx. 11%) is found in financial trading, specifically as Bulk Order Upload files for platforms like Odin Diet or Upstox. These are structured data files used to execute mass buy/sell orders. Traders often face friction because these files require strict formatting and cannot be easily reviewed in spreadsheet software without conversion. For trading data, converting to CSV or XLSX enables easy editing in Microsoft Excel.
