About VDA files
Most often, a .vda file is a VDA-FS (Verband der Automobilindustrie - Flächenschnittstelle) Surface Data file. This is a legacy ASCII-based exchange format established by the German Association of the Automotive Industry to transfer 3D free-form surfaces between different CAD systems like CATIA and Siemens NX.
The real problem with VDA-FS files is their age and limited scope. While once the standard for German car manufacturers, it has largely been superseded by the STEP (ISO 10303) format. VDA files contain only surface geometry - no solid bodies, history, or parametric features - which often results in "naked edges" or gaps when imported into modern solid modelers. Additionally, many modern viewers require paid add-ons to open them. For engineering purposes, the best workflow is converting to STEP or IGES to ensure compatibility with SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor. For 3D printing, convert to STL.
Note: A .vda file may alternatively be a compressed project archive created by Schneider Electric Vijeo Designer for HMI panels. In this specific case, the file is actually a renamed ZIP container. If CAD software fails to open your file, try renaming the extension to zip to extract the contents.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your VDA file.
If you want to convert VDA file to WEBP, CUR or PSB, you can use CATIA or similar software from the "3D Surface Data Exchange" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert RAW, PNG, AI, NEF, PSB, DNG, SVG, GIF, EPS, JPG, ARW or PDF files to VDA, try CATIA or another comparable tool in the "3D Surface Data Exchange" category.
The VDA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VDA converter.
