About VBX files

A .VBX file is primarily a 16-bit Visual Basic Custom Control used in legacy versions of Microsoft Visual Basic (versions 1.0 to 3.0). These files act as extensions that add interface elements or specific functions to applications. Alternatively, users may encounter .VBX files as VBScript prank scripts, which use the extension to bypass basic file filters.

These proprietary custom controls were built for 16-bit Windows architectures. Modern 64-bit operating systems cannot run them natively. They are essentially specialized executable binaries (using an internal EXE format) similar to dynamic-link libraries (DLL). Maintaining applications that rely on .VBX files requires outdated hardware or emulation software.

Directly converting a compiled .VBX control to a modern format is technically impossible because it contains compiled 16-bit machine code. Historically, developers manually migrated these controls to 32-bit OCX (OLE Custom Controls). If your file is a VBScript prank, you can safely rename the extension to TXT or VBS to read the plain text code.

Because these legacy files are closed, proprietary binaries, standard online converters fail to process them. Often, only the original 1990s software can properly read or execute the data. We can identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VBX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted VBK, CTRL, SHO and LCC files.

The VBX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VBX converter.
