About VBX files

The .VBX file extension primarily identifies a Visual Basic Custom Control, a modular software component used in the 16-bit era of Microsoft Visual Basic (versions 1.0 to 3.0). These files were the precursors to OCX (ActiveX) controls, functioning effectively as 16-bit DLL files designed to add specific widgets or functions to an application.

The main issue for users today is architectural obsolescence: .VBX files are 16-bit binaries that do not function on 64-bit Windows operating systems and are completely unsupported in modern IDEs like Visual Studio. Developers attempting to port legacy software often hit "Library not registered" errors or find they cannot load projects containing these references. If the file is the secondary variant - a renamed VBScript often used for pranks - you can convert it to TXT or PDF to safely inspect the code without executing it. For binary controls, the goal is often migration; use our tools to analyze headers or extract embedded bitmap resources to standard PNG or BMP formats for reuse in modern interfaces.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VBX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted VBK, CTRL, SHO and LCC files.

The VBX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VBX converter.
