About UMX files
The .UMX file extension primarily represents an Unreal Music Package, a proprietary container format developed by Epic Games for the original Unreal Engine. These files are iconic in the retro gaming community, storing the high-energy background music for titles like Unreal and Unreal Tournament.
Technically, a .UMX file is a wrapper that encapsulates tracker modules (such as MOD, S3M, XM, or IT). Because it is a game-specific archive, standard media players like Windows Media Player or mobile devices cannot play them directly. This format "locks" the music inside the game's ecosystem, making it impossible to add to a standard playlist or edit in a DAW without extraction.
To listen to these tracks on modern devices, users must convert .UMX to standard audio formats like MP3, WAV, or FLAC. For digital preservationists or remixers, the goal is often to extract the original tracker module intact.
Note for Medical Users: A significant portion of .UMX files (approx. 37%) are totally unrelated medical reporting files used by the Polish National Health Fund (NFZ). These are often XML data files compressed into a ZIP structure. If your file is not music-related, it is likely a dataset that requires specialized medical software like KS-PPS, though converting to XML or TXT may reveal the raw data structure.
Convert.Guru analyzes your UMX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert UMX file to EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP, SAV or DAT, you can use Unreal Tournament or similar software from the "Game Audio Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to UMX, try Unreal Tournament or another comparable tool in the "Game Audio Storage" category.
The UMX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UMX converter.
