The .S3M file is a "tracker module" - essentially a digital music score that includes both the musical notes (patterns) and the actual instrument sounds (samples) in a single package. Unlike a MP3 or WAV, which are simple recordings of sound waves, an S3M file is a set of real-time instructions for a computer to synthesize music. This format was the industry standard for the 1990s PC Demoscene, created by the legendary group Future Crew.
While highly efficient, .S3M files are functionally obsolete for general listening. They cannot be opened by most default media players (like Windows Media Player or iTunes) and are incompatible with mobile devices or web browsers. To listen to these files universally, you must "render" them by converting to MP3 or WAV. If you wish to extract the musical composition for use in other software, converting to MIDI is possible, though this will strip away the custom audio samples. For precise editing or playback that respects the original tracking commands, use OpenMPT or VLC Media Player.
