About UCM files

The .UCM file extension represents several distinct formats, most commonly a Microsoft Windows ReadyBoost cache file. ReadyBoost utilizes USB flash drives to cache disk reads, storing this data inside a GZIP-compressed .UCM file. The extension is also heavily used as an Unreal Engine custom mesh file for storing 3D game models, or as a Unicode Character Map used by developers for character encoding mapping. Other niche uses include cursor animations in Ultra Fractal and model files for the game Crazy Machines.

Users typically want to convert or open .UCM files because they are proprietary, system-locked, or require expensive software. The ReadyBoost cache file is a major source of frustration because it consumes gigabytes of storage on external drives and cannot be read by normal applications. Unreal mesh files present a different challenge: they are highly specific game engine assets that cannot be imported directly into standard 3D modeling software like Blender without specific plugins.

If you are handling a Unicode Character Map, the best target format is TXT or CSV to make the mapping readable. For Unreal meshes, converting to OBJ or FBX is ideal, though texture mapping data might be lost in transit.

Because this file format is difficult to open or convert, standard online converters usually fail. A ReadyBoost cache is encrypted system data, and Unreal meshes rely on proprietary game engine rendering. However, convert.guru provides a realistic workaround. Drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. Our platform will inspect the file to determine which of the multiple .UCM variations you possess. If our analysis detects the underlying GZIP compression or plain text data, viewing internal content or partial extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your UCM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

FAQ

If you want to convert UCM file to SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR, PIF or LNK, you can use Microsoft Windows or similar software from the "System Cache and Game Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to UCM, try Microsoft Windows or another comparable tool in the "System Cache and Game Data" category.

The UCM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UCM converter.
