About TRM files
The .trm file extension is most notoriously associated with For The Record (FTR) digital court recordings. These files are standard in legal environments for capturing multi-channel audio and video of proceedings. The primary frustration for users is that .trm files are proprietary; they cannot be opened by standard media players like VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player. Instead, they require the specific TheRecord Player to separate and play the distinct audio channels (e.g., isolating the judge's microphone from the witness's). For general sharing, transcription, or archiving, users often need to convert these specialized containers into standard formats like MP3, WAV, or AAC.
However, the .trm extension is a "chameleon" format with significant alternate uses. Approximately 19% of these files are Cummins ETrim engine injector calibration files, which are actually text-based XML data used to optimize engine performance. Another 7% are Trimble Terramodel project files used in surveying and civil engineering. Finally, legacy systems might produce Oracle IRM "sealed" documents - essentially PDF files wrapped in strict Digital Rights Management (DRM) that prevents unauthorized viewing.
Best Conversion Targets:
For FTR Audio: Convert to WAV to preserve audio quality or MP3 for easy email sharing. Note that converting to stereo will flatten the multi-channel separation capabilities.
For Cummins Data: Convert or rename to XML or TXT to view the calibration values in a text editor.

The TRM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TRM converter.
