Extract text from FTR files

To convert other file formats to the "Columnar Data Store" file type, you need software like Pandas or a similar tool.
The .ftr extension is most frequently associated with the Feather file format, a fast, lightweight binary columnar data storage format designed for efficient data exchange between languages like Python (using Pandas) and R. While Feather is excellent for speed and interoperability within data science workflows, its binary nature is often a source of frustration: you cannot open it in standard text editors, web browsers, or spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel without writing code to load it first. Additionally, version compatibility between the Apache Arrow libraries used to create the file can sometimes lead to read errors.
For general viewing and sharing, users often convert Feather files to CSV (for universal compatibility), XLSX (for business analysis), or JSON (for web integration).
Note: A distinct, unrelated use of the .ftr extension exists in navigation and aviation. In the trucking industry, it may be a roadmap overlay file for NNG iGO Navigation or PC*MILER. In aviation, it serves as a flight track log created by Naviter SeeYou software. These proprietary formats are often locked to their specific devices. If your file originated from a GPS unit rather than a data scientist, converting to GPX or KML is the standard approach for visualizing routes on Google Earth.
