Extract text from TPZ files
To convert your TPZ file to another format, you need Touch_Portal or other E-Book software.
To convert other file formats to the "Proprietary eBook / Settings Archive" file type, you need software like Touch_Portal or a similar tool.
The .tpz extension serves two distinct communities: ebook readers and content creators.
1. Amazon Kindle Topaz eBook: This is a legacy proprietary format (also known as AZW1) used for older Kindle books. Unlike standard MOBI or AZW3 files, Topaz files are not simple text containers; they function similarly to PDF or DjVu, storing pages as a series of glyphs (images) with an OCR text layer. This was designed to handle complex layouts and embedded fonts on early e-ink devices.
The Problem: Because Topaz files rely on this custom glyph rendering, they are incompatible with virtually all non-Kindle readers (like Apple Books or Kobo). They are also frequently wrapped in Amazon's DRM, making them impossible to open without specific decryption tools. Users typically convert these to PDF to preserve the exact page layout or EPUB for broad compatibility, though quality depends heavily on the internal OCR data.
2. Touch Portal Page/Plugin: For streamers and macro users, a .tpz file is a "Page" export from Touch Portal.
The Solution: This file is technically just a renamed ZIP archive. It contains a structure.json file defining button logic and an assets folder with icons (PNG, JPG). If the Touch Portal software refuses to import the file, or if you simply want to extract the custom icons for use in Photoshop or OBS Studio, you can rename the extension from .tpz to zip and extract the contents immediately without specialized conversion software.
