The .AZX file extension primarily identifies an encrypted school exam file used by the Azmoon Yar educational software. These files securely store test questions and student data in an encoded UTF-8 format to prevent unauthorized access and cheating. Unfortunately, the .AZX extension is also infamous in the cybersecurity world. It is frequently used by the CrySiS, AZLock, and AZEROV ransomware families. When this malware infects a computer, it encrypts the user's documents and appends the .AZX extension to the original file names. Less common uses include protected e-books for Amazon Kindle, content for Infogrid Pacific AZARDI, and occasionally scanned PDF documents generated by CamScanner.
The major disadvantage of the .AZX format is its aggressive encryption. These files are locked by design. You cannot easily open them in standard text editors or use generic tools to turn them into DOCX or PDF files. Exam files require an active login within the proprietary Azmoon Yar platform, while ransomware files require complex decryption keys to restore the original data. Because it is a closed, proprietary, or maliciously locked format, standard online converters fail to process it.
