About TLK files
A .TLK file is primarily a BioWare Aurora Engine Talk Table file used to store game dialogue, item descriptions, and localization text in classic RPGs like Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Mass Effect. A very small percentage of these files are associated with legacy Finnish accounting software named Tappio. The primary disadvantage of the .TLK format is its rigid, proprietary binary structure. It relies on a strictly indexed list of string IDs tied directly to the game engine's internal architecture. Because it is a compiled format, it is completely unsupported by standard web browsers or word processors. Attempting to open a .TLK file in a basic text editor like Notepad will result in unreadable gibberish, frustrating players and modders who just want to tweak a line of dialogue or translate a game module. To edit the text efficiently, users must convert these files to structured formats. The best conversion targets are XML, CSV, or TXT. Converting to CSV allows localization teams to translate thousands of dialogue lines in a spreadsheet, but users must be extremely careful to maintain the exact string ID mapping, or the game will crash when the file is recompiled. This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert without dedicated modding tools like TLKEdit or the Aurora Toolset. Standard online converters fail entirely because they lack the specific game engine string parsing logic required to read the binary index. Even with proprietary game assets, our tools can often inspect the file's raw hexadecimal structure, extract the embedded text strings, and allow you to view the dialogue contents safely.
Convert.Guru analyzes your TLK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The TLK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TLK converter.
